Where it all began
The Original Site
Strength Asylum originally started in a small back street warehouse in Longton, Stoke-on-Trent in 2010. A small but well equipped 700sq-ft private gym.
In 2012 the decision was made to open to the public which meant moving to a bigger unit, the budget was tight so we settled for a 2500sq-ft unit in a factory in the back streets of Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent. The position wasn’t great, parking was limited, we had our doubts but started to move in anyway.
In July 2012 just before we were due to open we found a new site, just outside the centre of Hanley. It was a perfect location with a huge carpark and double the size, we took the plunge and relocated.
Having more room than we needed and not enough equipment to fill it, we split the unit, half gym and half circuit training.
We finally opened on 27th August 2012.
Over the next year or so we invested in lots of new equipment and the memberships grew. The problem was that we quickly began to run out of space. In 2014 a small neighbouring unit became available and so the expansion began.
We moved the circuit training into this new unit which allowed us to expand the gym again.
This unit wasn’t really big enough for circuit training and we were still buying more equipment. A couple of months later a third unit came available, we weren’t really ready but knew if we didn’t get it now we might miss out all together. This third unit then became a dedicated circuit training class room.
We struggled through, gaining more members and buying yet more equipment. Over the next year the gym went from strength from to strength and in mid 2015 a decision was made to stop running classes and concentrate purely on the gym. The circuit room let way for strongman equipment and overspill of other gym equipment.
Over the next 6 months the decision paid off, we continued buying equipment but also undertook a series of building improvements to make the gym warmer through the winter.
November 2015 Strength Asylum Tour Video
By the end of 2015 we thought we expanded as much as we possibly could and decided to do a full walk-through tour of the gym showing all of the machines and equipment.
We surprised ourselves when it took a full 7 minutes to walk through !
As the gym got busier floor space got eaten up until members had nowhere to stretch off and do floor work. With no option to take on another unit we decided to refurbish an old mezzanine floor giving members a quiet studio area.
In spring 2016 we were told another unit was going to become available, this final unit would allow us to complete our plans giving a new and improved reception, shop, eating area, changing rooms and freeing up much needed floor space.
Reception & Shop
We are just adding the final touches and as soon as the work is completed we will be adding a full 360 degree walk-through video.
